Ajay Devgn’s new release Bholaa has opened its account at the box office with a “decent score” of Rs 11.20 crore, reports trade analyst Taran Adarsh. Bholaa, which released on Ram Navami yesterday, is a remake of 2019 Tamil hit Kaithi, starring Karthi. The Hindi version also stars Tabu, one of Ajay Devgn’s most frequent collaborators. Ticket sales for the new release were lower during the morning and afternoon shows on opening day with evening shows compensating. Bholaa needs to perform well on the weekend to clock a “respectable total,” Mr Adarsh wrote in his tweet.

Bholaa puts up a decent score on Day 1 (Ram Navami). Healthy footfalls during spot bookings – towards evening shows specifically – compensate for the low turnout in morning + noon shows. Thursday – Rs 11.20 crore. India biz. Day 1 biz tilts more towards mass centres, with Mumbai remaining low. Needs to gather pace over the weekend for a respectable total,” Taran Adarsh tweeted.

Bholaa opened to mixed reviews on Thursday. Writing for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee said: “Bholaa, official remake of the Tamil hit Kaithi (of which, too, there is a sequel in the works), sucks out whatever air there was in Lokesh Kanagaraj’s film and delivers a stale, slapdash rehash that rides solely on Devgn’s star power. He gives it his all, but that is hardly enough to paper over the massive creases.”

He continued: “Tabu, of course, makes the most of the footage that she gets but still has to settle for second-fiddle treatment. Only two other actors are allowed their moments – Deepak Dobriyal (oozing menace) and Sanjay Mishra (exuding simmering doggedness).”

Directed and produced by Ajay Devgn himself, Bholaa co-stars Gajraj Rao, Kiran Kumar, Makarand Deshpande, Vineet Kumar
