President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India’s star track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra on his magnificent silver win at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. Taking to their social media handle ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), the leaders separately lauded Chopra for clinching two successive Olympic medals for the country — his first gold in the Tokyo Olympics followed by his silver medal in the men’s javelin event at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024.

While, President Murmu praised Neeraj Chopra for becoming the first Indian athlete to win a gold and a silver medal in two successive Olympic Games, inspiring generations with his spectacular feat. PM Modi, commenting on Neeraj Chopra’s success, said, “India is elated that Neeraj Chopra returns with yet another Olympic success. He will continue to motivate countless upcoming athletes to pursue their dreams and make our nation proud. Congratulations to him on winning the silver.”

Additionally, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated Chopra on his historic achievement, stating, “What a moment for Bharat! A silver medal for Neeraj Chopra. He has won his second consecutive Olympic medal! This incredible achievement is historic — no individual in independent Bharat has ever achieved this in athletics.”

“Congratulations Neeraj, you’ve inspired a nation and shown the world what determination and excellence look like. We couldn’t be prouder! Thank you for making India shine on the global stage,” he added.

Neeraj Chopra settles for Silver in Paris 

India’s star track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra recorded his season-best throw of 89.45m to win silver in the men’s javelin event at the Paris Olympics after Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem shattered the all-time Olympic record of 90.57m with a throw of 92.97m to clinch the gold medal.

Neeraj Chopra’s silver at the Paris Olympics immortalises his legacy in the track and field category and in javelin, in particular. He became the first Indian track and field athlete to claim two medals after independence. However, the silver in Paris didn’t come easily for Neeraj as he battled adductor niggle all the way leading into his run at the Summer Games in 2024.
