In Mysuru’s Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens, special measures are in place to shield animals from the sun’s scorching heat, ahead of summer. There has been a surge in visitors towards the end of February. To provide relief from the sun’s heat, cages are equipped with water nozzles. An artificial pond has been constructed for elephants, deers, and wildebeests, with water falling on them from nozzles. Additionally, coconut feather platforms have been set up for animals to rest. The menu for animal feed has been modified to prioritise water-rich foods. Muniraju, the RFO of Mysore Zoo, mentioned that cool areas are preferred by gorillas, so AC and fans have been installed in their sleeping quarters.
Currently, Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens houses ten elephants, making it the zoo with the highest number of elephants in India. Over time, a total of 34 elephants have resided here, with several being relocated to other zoos in Mysuru. The zoo boasts five green anacondas, generously provided by Colombo Zoo. Notably, it is the sole zoo in India to accommodate chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans, white rhinos, and cheetahs.
The Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens has a rich history spanning over a century. It was established by Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar in 1892, as part of his vision to create a well-planned city surrounded by gardens. Initially, the zoo, sprawling over 250 acres, was reserved for exclusive visits by the royal family. Public access began as early as 1920. Following India’s independence, the zoo was handed over by the Maharaja to the Department of Parks and Gardens of the Mysuru State Government.
The zoo is conveniently located approximately 3 km from the Mysuru city bus stand and 2 km from Mysuru Palace. Regular city buses operate to and from the zoo, providing easy access for visitors. Alternatively, you can hire an auto-rickshaw or Jataka Gaadi (horse carts) from Mysuru Palace to reach the zoo. If you plan to explore other tourist attractions in Mysuru, hiring a cab would be a convenient option.
