The proposed design for a new train station in the Chinese city of Nanjing has been trolled by internet users for its shape. Eagle-eyed netizens have poked fun at the design and ridiculed the proposed $2.7 billion railway station for having a striking resemblance to a sanitary pad.

A report by the Daily Mail said that the designers said that the four-lobed building is meant to resemble a plum blossom but netizens were quick to point out that plum blossoms famously have five petals.

“Why can we all tell it is a sanitary pad immediately, but the architects can’t,” one user, on China’s heavily-monitored social media site Weibo, said.

The Nanjing North station is set to become the city’s biggest station spanning over an area of 37.6 square kms which will serve an estimated 36.5 million passengers a year.

But that did not prevent social media users from mocking the design. “This is a giant sanitary pad. It’s embarrassing to say it looks like a plum blossom,” another Weibo user said.

“I think we should take this chance to call for society to pay attention to period shaming. This design is ahead of its time,” another commenter joked.

Some have also joked about the station’s design and the functionality of a sanitary pad. “No matter how large the passenger flow is, it can be fully absorbed and stay dry all day long,” the user said.

But some netizens also defended the design and questioned if it is a bad thing if the station looks like a sanitary pad.

“Don’t be so whiny. If your mother didn’t menstruate, she wouldn’t have been able to give birth to you. Support Nanjing North Railway Station,” one user said.

The Daily Mail citing the Nanjing Morning News said the design has been greenlit by the Nanjing provincial government and the China State Railway Group.

Another Nanjing-based news outlet, The Nanjinger construction will begin in the first half of this year and the station will receive its first passengers by the start of 2028.
